Government funding backs the next stage of Kai Keepers

1 October 2026

New Government funding will help Kai Keepers support more hospitality businesses to reduce food waste and keep organic waste out of landfill.

Environment Minister Hon Nicola Grigg announced on 29 September that the Restaurant Association of New Zealand will receive funding to expand Kai Keepers for a further year.

The announcement is part of the Government’s National Food Waste Reduction Programme, supporting initiatives across households, food production, hospitality and other businesses.

For Kai Keepers, this supports the next stage of our work with hospitality venues — helping businesses understand where food is going to waste, make practical changes and explore diversion options for unavoidable food scraps.

Reducing food waste means making better use of ingredients, lowering costs and reducing the environmental impact of everyday operations.

Be part of the next stage

We’re inviting hospitality businesses to share what they’re already doing with food waste and let us know whether they’d be interested in support to do more.

Our quick survey asks about your current practices, how you’re diverting food waste and where you could use a hand. Taking part doesn’t commit you to joining the programme — it simply opens the conversation.

We know the busy season is approaching, so you don’t need to get started straight away. We can work with you to find a time that suits your business, including in 2027.
